Defensive Pistol Matches
Shooter’s offers the Defensive Pistol Match to provide an opportunity for people who have a concealed carry permit, or are thinking about getting one, to practice shooting in an environment somewhat like they would encounter if they had to use their firearm in a real life situation. We are not trying to emulate an International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) match. This is an instructional event where participants can practice drawing from a holster, doing rapid fire, and engaging multiple targets.
In each match there will be three or four scenarios, requiring approximately 60 to 80 rounds of ammunition. We shoot at IDPA cardboard targets. Scenarios are timed, require drawing from a holster, and include shooting while stationary and while moving. Scenarios may include one handed or two handed shooting. Participants will engage multiple targets in a designated sequence.
Matches are on the first Wednesday of each month starting at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM and the following Thursday at 2 PM. Matches last approximately three hours. Cost is $10 per shooter. You can shoot in only one of these matches. Arrive by 1:30 PM or 5:30 PM to get signed in and for the safety briefing. The matches will end by 5 PM and 9 PM, respectively. Each match is limited to the first 15 people who sign up.
The 2 PM match is less competitive and more instructional. The 6 PM match is more competitive. Each shooter will be timed in each scenario using a shot timer. Scores are a combination of accuracy and speed; the lowest combined score wins. Firearms must be drawn from concealment (except for law enforcement).
You may compete with a 22LR handgun - available at the 2 PM matches only. The handgun must still be a concealable firearm, and drawn from concealment.
NOTE: Starting in January 2017, the first scenario will be for compact, conceal carry guns only. The gun must fit flat in a box with inside dimensions of 7 5/8 inches long and 5 1/4 inches high. The barrel can be a maximum length of 4.0 inches. The first scenario will require 5 to 9 shots and the maximum target distance will be 7 yards. Participants will draw from concealment. They may have one spare magazine or speed loader, carried concealed. (If you have questions about the restrictions for this scenario, please call John Shackelford at 618-567-7306.)
The second through fourth scenarios will be for any concealable handgun (iron sights only). There will be no barrel length or gun size restrictions, but it must be concealed when holstered. Participants will be allowed to load magazines to a maximum of 10 rounds per magazine. They must draw from a waist holster (either inside the waist band or outside the waist band) and from concealment. Extra magazines or speed loaders must be in holders worn on the belt line.
Here is a list of what you will need:
- A defensive pistol (.380 ACP to .45 ACP) (can shoot a .22 LR pistol at the 2 PM match only)
- A concealable holster, either Inside the Waist Band (IWB) or Outside the Waist Band (OWB) with a concealment garment
- Extra magazine(s) (for scenarios 2 - 4, enough magazines to hold 20 rounds, a minimum of 3)
- A magazine holder (belt mounted)
- Eye and ear protection
- 60 to 80 rounds of factory loaded ammunition (no steel core ammo, absolutely no private reloads)
We will be running 3-4 courses of fire each match. Plan on helping with patching holes in targets, sweeping up brass, and making course changes throughout the event.
If you have any questions please call us at 618-281-6393.
Please sign up for the match you wish to attend in advance. Each match is limited to the first 15 people who sign up. In the event a match is canceled due to an emergency we will contact those who have signed up before the match start time.
